The two searches

The changeover day belongs to both bookings. Enter it exactly like that — "Thursday to Sunday" is the phrasing that loses a night.
Book the north. Thu 3 → Mon 7, five adults. Goes first: it's an hour from the airport, Lecce is 2h30, and it fixes the changeover date. Clear the leader's three open questions first — 21:30 arrival in writing, real beds for five, air con in every bedroom.
Book the car. Seven-seat MPV, back row down. Five checked plus five cabin bags won't go in an ordinary car. Automatic? Book today — that class sells out first.
Book Lecce. Mon 7 → Thu 10. Probably the harder one — three-bed, two-bath, inside the walls, with real parking is a small set.
Still unanswered: bed configuration · manual or automatic · budget per base · anyone bad with stairs · dinner budget. .
Reserve what sells out. Five is never a walk-in in September, and two of these need weeks. .
Registration plate to the Lecce host for ZTL access, and Trenitalia tickets only if the Naples day trip happens.

How to split the seven nights
Sets the two date ranges you search on, so it comes before anything else. Current thinking is four north — not settled.

Settled in shape — one big car, one driver by preference, with others able to drive if needed. What's left is booking it, and one thing worth doing anyway.

How to spend the last afternoon
You check out of Lecce around ten and the flight is 20:55, so you have roughly seven hours either way. The only question is what fills them — and all three options cost about the same driving.
→ Nothing to book, so this can genuinely wait for the morning. Two things that would decide it earlier: whether anyone wants to see Bari at all, and how tired the group is by then. Bari is a dense city walk in September heat at the end of a long week — good, but not restful.
Checking a listing
Hold every candidate against this. The first two actually disqualify places; the rest are comparisons.
Late check-in — the disqualifier
You land at 20:05 and the northern base is an hour away, so you are at the door around 21:30. Many hosts stop accepting arrivals at 20:00 or 21:00, and one who meets guests in person may decline outright. For the north booking: self check-in or a lockbox, and message the host your real arrival time before paying.
Parking — the Lecce disqualifier
Inside the walls is ZTL and most apartments have no space of their own. Ask for the garage name and the nightly cost, and send the registration plate so they can register the car. A vague answer is a reason to book elsewhere, not something to sort out on arrival.
Air conditioning in the bedrooms
Not the living room — the bedrooms. Early September nights inland still sit around 20°C, and trulli are beautiful, thick-walled and stifling. Confirm it's in every room anyone is sleeping in.
The pool, honestly
Shared with other units or not, what hours it's open — some close at 19:00 — and whether the photos show any shade. A pool in full sun with no cover is unusable from noon to four, which is exactly when you want it.
How far is "near Ostuni"
Listings stretch this badly. Get the actual pin, then check the drive to a beach and into Ostuni. Twenty minutes down an unlit gravel track is a different holiday from twenty minutes on a road — especially coming home after dinner.
Minimum stay
Three nights is a common floor, and most Puglian villas and trulli are built around Saturday-to-Saturday weeks. Your split helps here: you're filling two mid-week gaps rather than needing one seven-night window.
Pick the north
Thu 3 → Mon 7, four nights, five adults. Twelve candidates, two of them found by searching directly. Read down the columns — that's where the differences are.
The budget, as totals for five adults
£65 pppn is the ceiling — £1,300 for the four northern nights, £975 for the three in Lecce. Under £50 pppn is preferred — £1,000 and £750. Under £30 pppn is cheap — £600 and £450.
Two candidates breach the ceiling: Ai Trulli Resort at £69.05 and Villa with Pool and Hot Tub at £69.55. Both are kept in the table below, marked over, because they're the best-reviewed things found.

Book this one · 85, and it fits the budget
Trullo dell'Upupa — Ostuni
- Three double bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The host renovated specifically to add two: "we recently renovated again and added two more bathrooms, so each bedroom conveniently has its own bathroom." Five adults, all in real beds, plus a spare sofa bed nobody needs.
- A private pool, on very large panoramic terraces wrapping the stone building, in the Ostuni countryside — your preferred area — with the sea on the horizon.
- Check-in runs 15:00 to 23:00. The 21:30 arrival stops being a question at all — the first northern candidate to clear that gate with room to spare.
- Central air conditioning, not a single unit, plus free parking on the premises.
→ It clears all four gates, sits £353 under Ai Trulli, and is the only 85 in the search. Ask about pool hours and confirm the A/C reaches all three bedrooms.

A pool inside the budget does exist — it just isn't on the coast
Filtering by price rather than browsing turned up pools from £550 to £1,435 for the four nights. The catch is a straight swap: pool villas sit inland, beach flats sit on the coast. Nothing under £65 pppn does both.
Trullo dell'Upupa wins because it takes the least bad side of that swap — Ostuni countryside is 15 minutes to a swim, against 35–40 for the Alberobello and Ceglie options — while being the only property in the entire search with a bathroom for every bedroom.
Also checked and rejected, so they don't come round again
Il Trullo La Cicala, Ceglie Messapica — £792, 4.8 from 50 reviews. Looked like the value pick of the whole search. Opened it: the heating-and-cooling section lists a fireplace and heating and no air conditioning at all. Check-in also ends at 20:00. Out on gate 01.
Beachside Villa with Pool, Fasano — £1,159. The one listing that is both beachside and has a pool. One bathroom for five adults, and 3 reviews. Not worth £58 pppn.
Trullo, Cisternino — heated pool, 4.96 from 50, £1,215. Only 1.5 bathrooms, and Cisternino is 40 minutes from the sea.
Palazzo Giannotte Suite, Ostuni — £587, £29.40 pppn, pool. In the cheap band with a pool, but 4.6 from only 5 reviews. Worth a look if price beats everything.
Three never reached scoring: Trullo dei Briganti (dates gone), the Alberobello farmhouse with a pool (four adults max), Dimora Barbara (four guests max).
What the 12% Expedia discount is worth here
Expedia and hotels.com are the same group and largely share inventory, so take the 12% wherever a property appears on both. None of the leaders qualify — they are all Airbnb. The play is shortlisted properties that are cross-listed, where the gap can be large: La Casa Sulla Roccia is £985 on Expedia against £1,063 on Airbnb, so £867 after the discount — £196 saved on the same four nights.
- Il Casale nel Parco, Ostuni — £1,353 → £1,191, £59.55 pppn. Pool, parking and breakfast for five, in the preferred area, inside the ceiling. One review, so unverified.
- La Casa Sulla Roccia Trulli Pool, Monopoli — £985 → £867, £43.35 pppn. Pool and parking, but one bathroom and 4.5 from 6.
- Bianca Olive House ~£741 and Hotiday Fasano Mare £865 — both still fail the air-con gate, so the discount changes nothing.
Expedia's own villa inventory has never been searched, only used to price Airbnb finds. That is the largest saving still untested.
Pick Lecce
Mon 7 → Thu 10, three nights. Four candidates. The one found by searching is the only one that passes the parking gate outright.
Book this one
TinHouse — Lecce, Via Lequile
- The first candidate to actually pass the parking gate. A private parking space included, and a garage available on request — not "parking nearby". Guests confirm it: "parking in the same building".
- Outside the ZTL but a 10–15 minute walk to the historic centre. You get the passeggiata on foot without a camera-enforced zone between you and the car.
- Five real beds — a double, two singles, one single. No sofa bed, no bunk. Two bathrooms.
- 4.9 from 10 reviews, hosts repeatedly praised for quick, clear communication.
→ Only open question: air con is a generic tick, so confirm all three bedrooms have it.

Mimì Maison is shaded because two guests report a €200 deposit never returned, and Airbnb flags it bottom 10% — not because of the score alone.
The Lecce trade just dissolved
The choice looked like "baroque evening on the doorstep, or a property that behaves properly". TinHouse is both — a 10–15 minute walk from the centre, so the passeggiata is on foot, but on Via Lequile outside the ZTL with its own parking space and a garage on request.
That's the gate-03 answer nothing else gave: a named, included, private space rather than "parking nearby". It also removes the €80–100 camera risk entirely, because you never drive into the restricted zone.
Also found, worth a look if TinHouse goes
[Salento Luxury] Martano — £494, 3 bed, 2 bath, 4.99 from 75 reviews, free parking. 25 min from Lecce. The highest-rated thing in the southern search, but it's a village further out than Carmiano.
Villa near Gallipoli, Galatone — £552, 3 bed, 2 bath, 4.91 from 102 reviews. House of Roses, Lecce — £528, 3 bed, 3 bath, but only 4.59 from 22, and it's the same operator as Doberdò.
Two tweaks to the plan itself
Both of these change what you need to buy, rather than which listing you buy. They are worth more than another twenty listings.
Tweak 01 · The pool is a line item, not a property requirement
The pool premium is now measurable. Trullo dell'Upupa £1,028 against Dimora Imma £731 is £297. Against Ai Trulli it is £650. That is what a pool costs on this trip.
But look at why the pool is in the plan: the week uses it on exactly two afternoons — "back at the pool by half four" after Matera, and again after Alberobello. Two afternoons. And this is a beach-led trip, where the plan currently drives five people back inland to a pool instead of into the sea.
A lido — a Puglian beach club with hired loungers and an umbrella — does the same job for those two afternoons, at the sea, for a fraction of £297. Rosa Marina, Torre Pozzelle and Costa Merlata all sit on the Ostuni coast. That reframes the pool from a £300–650 property constraint into a small day cost, and it frees the property search to optimise for the thing that actually matters — being close to water.
The lido day rate for five needs pricing before this is a decision — September is shoulder season and rates drop, but I have not verified a figure and will not invent one.
Tweak 02 · Flip the split — three nights north, four south
The southern inventory is cheaper and better rated than the north. Ca'd'Antonia is £25.90 pppn at 4.93, TinHouse £37.47 at 4.9, Doberdò £32.07 at 4.74. The north is where you are paying £51–69 pppn to get a pool and a second bathroom.
So put the cheap nights where the good cheap stock is. Four nights south, three north, spends less overall and raises the average quality. It also resolves Ca'd'Antonia's four-night minimum, which currently rules out the best-built property found anywhere.
The site already lists 3+4 as a scheduling option under decision 01. Nobody has looked at it as a budget lever, which is what it actually is.
And the reframe that costs nothing
The £65 ceiling was applied per leg. Read across the week — 7 nights × 5 × £65 = £2,275 — and the arithmetic changes: Upupa + TinHouse is £45.43 pppn, inside the preferred band, and Ai Trulli + TinHouse is £55.51 pppn, comfortably inside the ceiling. On a week-average reading, Ai Trulli Resort was never over budget — and it is the best-evidenced property in the search at 5.0 from 83 reviews.
Splitting across two units
This removes the constraint that has been binding every search: five adults in one property. Two units side by side means nobody shares a bathroom and no sofa bed is needed.
Why this is the strongest idea on the page
Every rejection so far traces back to fitting five into one place — the single bathrooms, the child-sized bunks, the sofa beds, the four-guest caps. Search for two units at three guests each and that whole class of problem disappears: two kitchens, two bathrooms, two gardens, and each pair or trio has its own front door.
The right shape is a masseria or trulli complex with a shared pool, so it's still one address, one drive, one pool — just two keys.

All are single units in larger properties, so the same question applies to each: is there a second one free on the dates?
The one decision left

Pool north, walk-in Lecce
Trullo dell'Upupa £1,028 + TinHouse £562. Private pool and a bathroom for every bedroom up north; own parking and a 15-minute walk into Lecce for the last three nights.
Scores 85 and 82 — the only book-it in the search. Inside the £65 ceiling on both legs, and the week as written finally works.
Both still need one message: which rooms have air con.
Option B · £1,293 for both bases · £37 pppn
Save £650, lose the pool
Dimora Imma £731 + TinHouse £562. Two bathrooms, best-rated cheap option north, same Lecce flat.
Scores 73 and 82. You keep £650 — £130 a head — and give up the pool, the third bathroom, and a guaranteed fifth bed. Dimora Imma still hasn't said where the fifth adult sleeps.
Also needs a written yes on a 21:30 arrival, since Gino meets guests in person.
My recommendation
Option A. Trullo dell'Upupa is the only property in the search that clears all four gates and lands in the book-it band: private pool, three bedrooms each with its own bathroom, central air conditioning, free parking, and check-in open to 23:00 so the 21:30 arrival stops being a question. At £51.40 pppn it is inside the ceiling.
The £297 gap to Option B buys the pool the itinerary already assumes twice over, and removes the two unresolved risks on Dimora Imma — the in-person handover and the unexplained fifth bed.
The party
Five adults · two bathrooms preferred
- ✓ Five travellers. Every search is five adults, four nights north, three in Lecce.
- ✓ Two showers and two toilets preferred. A stated preference rather than a hard gate, so it's weighted heavily in the score rather than disqualifying a place outright. Say the word and I'll make it a gate.
- − Five is the number that reshapes the car. Five adults with five checked bags does not fit in an ordinary five-seat hire car. .
Five open questions, in the order they'd change something
- 01What's the bed configuration? Five adults as two couples plus one, or five separate beds? Three bedrooms, or two bedrooms and someone on a sofa bed for four nights? "Sleeps 5" on a listing routinely counts a sofa. This is the single biggest filter on what's eligible.
- 02Can the driver drive a manual? Answered in part: one big car and one driver by preference, others able to drive if needed. What's still open is the gearbox — with a single driver there's no fallback, and automatic seven-seaters are the scarcest class in the Italian fleet.
- 03What's the ceiling per base? Without a number I can't score value at all. The northern shortlist now spans roughly £429 to £850 for the four nights. Whether the top of that is comfortable or steep is a figure only you have.
- 04Anyone with knees, hips or a fear of stairs? Matera's Sassi are steep uneven stone with a real climb back up, plenty of Lecce old-town apartments have no lift, and Lama Monachile is a staircase down to the beach. Any of those being a problem changes the plan, not just the booking.
- 05What's the ceiling for dinner? A table for five at the places worth booking runs from about €25 a head at a good trattoria to well over €100 at Matera's starred restaurant. Worth a number before anyone reserves anything.
Northern candidates
Thu 3 → Mon 7 September, four nights, five adults at five as the searched occupancy. Thirteen candidates read directly off the listing pages, including every guest review.
Ten candidates in, still exactly one pool — and it isn't in a house
The only northern option with a pool on the exact dates is a hotel: two rooms, no kitchen, no shared living space. The one farmhouse-with-a-pool that came up caps at four adults, so it can't take the group at all. The week as written leans on a pool twice, and nothing here delivers it in a house.
The other thing this batch settled: Booking.com publishes a structured field Airbnb doesn't. Both Alberobello trulli show "Single-room air conditioning for guest accommodation" — meaning one room, not per bedroom. On Airbnb the same properties show only a generic "Air conditioning" tick. That field is now the first thing to check on any cross-listed property.

Three more failed gate 04 before scoring — not free for five on the dates
The Trullo of the Briganti, Monopoli countryside — 4.86 from 170 reviews, Superhost, free parking on site, two bathrooms, five real beds, garden with a barbecue under the grapevines. Reads like the best thing in the batch and then returns "Those dates are not available" for 3–7 September. Worth asking Claudia directly whether anything shifts.
Typical Stone farm-house with pool, Alberobello (Coreggia) — £601, a real shared pool, free parking, both alarms fitted. Out on the host's own wording: "There are 2 beds and 2 sofa bed for kid, totally 6 guests, 4 adults maximum." The pool the trip wants, in a place that will not take five adults.
Dimora Barbara, Alberobello — returns "Maximum number of guests is 4". Two beds, and a 16:00–19:00 check-in window that would have failed the arrival flag anyway.

Safety: smoke alarm not reported, CO alarm fitted, and "heights without rails or protection" — relevant on a property built around terraces. Six guests maximum, so five is comfortable.

Ten candidates and the leader hasn't changed
Dimora Imma still tops the north at 73, and nothing in this batch of ten got near it. It remains the only northern property that commits to air-conditioned bedrooms in writing, and its two open questions — a 21:30 arrival and where the fifth adult sleeps — are still both answerable by one message.
The batch did change the shape of the problem. Five of the ten fail gate 01 on air conditioning, two of them because Booking.com's structured field says "single-room A/C" where Airbnb showed a generic tick. Three more never reached scoring — unavailable, or capped at four adults. And the single-bathroom pattern is now the dominant flaw up north: four of the ten have one bathroom for five adults, including the two best-reviewed properties in the search.
The best new arrival is the Polignano flat at 61 — 4.93 from 136 reviews, Guest Favourite, five real beds, a host who repeatedly waits up for night flights. One bathroom is the only thing keeping it out of the seventies. If two showers turns out to be softer than stated, it goes straight to the top of this list.
The pool problem is now confirmed rather than suspected. Thirteen properties in, the only northern option with a pool on your dates is a hotel, and the one farmhouse with a pool won't take five adults. Either the week stops leaning on a pool, or the search has to go looking specifically for masserie with one — which, on the evidence of the "similar properties" panels, means roughly £1,000–£1,400 for four nights rather than £650–£900.
Lecce candidates
Mon 7 → Thu 10 September, three nights, priced at those dates rather than the northern ones. Three candidates — and only one of them is actually in Lecce.
The trade here is brutal and it's the same trade every time
The only candidate inside the walls is 200 metres from Piazza Sant'Oronzo and rated 3.75 out of 5, with Airbnb's own bottom-10% badge and two guests reporting their deposit was never returned. The two well-run options are both villages — 15 minutes out at Carmiano, or 40 kilometres out at Ortelle.
Put plainly: you can have the baroque evening passeggiata, or you can have a property that behaves properly. Nothing on this list gives you both.

The penalty schedule, from the listing itself: €200 deposit on arrival by card or cash; €80 if waste isn't sorted for up to 10 kg, plus €50 for each additional kilo; €40 if the stove and cutlery aren't left clean; €15 per person for a linen change. Alvaro's review is a guest being charged under exactly the first of these.
Only worth asking if the position is non-negotiable:
- Name the garage, the nightly price, and confirm you will register the plate for the ZTL.
- We arrive Monday afternoon from the north — can you get a car to the door outside 16:00–18:00?
- Is the €200 deposit refundable through Airbnb rather than cash, and what is the release timeline?
- Is there WiFi? It is not on the amenity list.
- Air conditioning is stated for "all rooms" — confirm the bunk room has its own unit.
- Check-in closes at 20:00 — is later possible?
→ Right address, wrong operator. Two guests describe losing a €200 deposit; that's a reason to look for a different flat inside the walls, not to negotiate with this one.
Doberdò is the one to push on
It scores 70 with the best bed configuration in the whole search — three double bedrooms, five adults, nobody on furniture — free parking that three separate guests confirm is easy, lockbox check-in to midnight, and it's the only southern candidate that works on the primary three-night dates. One open question: which bedrooms have air conditioning.
Ca'd'Antonia also scores 70 but isn't really a rival, because it can't take a three-night booking and it's 40 km from Lecce. It's the best-built property found anywhere — air con proven room by room, five real beds, two full bathrooms, £518 — and it exists only if the 3+4 split wins. That makes it an argument for the split rather than a Lecce option.
And the honest gap: there is still no well-run property inside the Lecce walls on this list. Mimì Maison has the address and a 3.75 rating with deposit disputes. If staying inside the walls matters, that search isn't finished — it needs three or four more candidates in the centro storico with a named garage.
Four hard gates. Fail one and it's out, whatever else it has.
- 01Air conditioning in every bedroom Not "air conditioning available", not a unit in the living room, not fans. Every room anyone sleeps in. Trulli and old stone houses are the ones that fail this, and they're exactly the ones that look best in photos.
- 02Arrival after 21:30 accepted — north base only You land at 20:05 and the drive is an hour. Self check-in or a lockbox, confirmed in writing by the host before you pay.
- 03A straight answer on parking — Lecce only Garage named, nightly price quoted, and willing to register the plate for ZTL. "There is parking nearby" is a fail.
- 04Free on the exact dates, for five Not "nearly" — a one-night shift breaks the other booking. Five must be the searched occupancy, not the maximum the place squeezes to, and check the minimum-stay rule while you're there.

Out of 100, weighted differently for the two bases because what matters is genuinely different — a pool is most of the point up north and irrelevant in Lecce.

No pool weighting — three nights in a walking city, and you'll be out every evening. A three-bedroom, two-bathroom flat inside the walls with parking is a genuinely small set, so this may end up the harder of the two bookings.

Book it. Don't wait for a better option to appear — at five weeks out, in September, it won't.
Strong contender. Hold, compare against anything else that lands in the next few days, then commit.
Fallback. Fine if nothing better turns up. Something specific is compromised and I'll name it.
Pass. Not worth the booking fee.
Out. Failed a hard gate. No score — a 90 with no bedroom air con is still out.
What to send
A link on its own is now enough — I can open listing pages directly and read the price, amenities and reviews. What's left are the things no listing states, which means asking the host.
The air con wording, verbatim
Copy the amenities line exactly. "Air conditioning" as a single tick usually means one unit somewhere, and the bedrooms are where it matters. If the listing is ambiguous, that's a question for the host before booking — and on a trulli conversion, assume the worst until told otherwise.
Total price, not per night
The headline nightly rate excludes cleaning and service, which on a four-night stay can add 20–25%. The total at checkout for the exact dates is the only comparable number. Bianca Olive House's ~£814 is the non-refundable rate; fully refundable is about £39 more.
Bedrooms and beds, once the group size is settled
Five adults is a very different search from two, and it's the difference between most of the Valle d'Itria's trulli being eligible and almost none of them being eligible.
Review count, not just the rating
4.9 from six reviews tells you much less than 4.7 from two hundred. New listings aren't disqualifying, but they're a risk I'll price into the host score.
Check-in cutoff
Usually buried in the house rules rather than the summary. For the northern place this is a gate, not a nice-to-have — you're arriving at half nine at night.
The route
North first, then south. Almost everything in the northern cluster sits inside half an hour of base; Matera is the one reach inland.

Not a scheduling error — the bookends. A 20:05 landing costs an evening, the 20:55 departure eats the last day, so seven nights gives six usable days.

What's already right
History is concentrated, not smeared — Matera takes most of it in one day. No museum-a-day march.
Food at 7% is fine, since it lives in the evenings. The catch: the two things worth booking ahead are the easiest to forget.

In, and paid for out of the rest day
Matera isn't in Puglia at all — it's over the border in Basilicata, an hour and twenty-five minutes inland from the northern base. It's also the most striking thing within reach of this trip by some distance, and it's now in the week.

Matera, the Sunday
A whole town of cave dwellings carved into the side of a ravine, lived in more or less continuously for nine thousand years. The Italian state forcibly emptied the Sassi in the 1950s as a national disgrace, then spent the next fifty years turning them into a UNESCO site and, in 2019, a European Capital of Culture.
The shape of the day
Leave around eight. Walk into the Sassi by half nine while the ravine is still in shadow, long lunch in a cave restaurant, back at the pool by half four. Morning is not optional — Matera is bare stone with no shade and it holds September heat like an oven.
Parking and the walk
The Sassi are pedestrian-only, steep, and paved in uneven stone — expect a lot of up on the way back. Park in a paid lot on the rim (Piazza Matteotti or Via Casalnuovo) and walk down; the historic centre is ZTL-controlled like everywhere else on this trip. Sensible shoes, and water.
It's a Sunday
Sassi churches keep restricted Sunday hours and some cave restaurants close Sunday evening, so check opening times for anything you're specifically going for and book lunch ahead. If this becomes a real problem, the fix is swapping Matera to the Saturday and Alberobello to the Sunday — Alberobello suffers far less from it.
If Sunday goes wrong
Rain, or a group that can't face an eight o'clock start twice in a week. Two places Matera can move to, both worse than the Sunday — keep them in your pocket rather than planning around them.
Fallback A
On the way to the airport
Lecce → Matera → Bari is 3h 25 against 2h 15 direct, so it adds about an hour and ten to a drive you're already making, and Sunday stays empty.
The catch: you arrive at midday in full sun with all the luggage in the car, you lose Bari old town, and departure day becomes the longest drive of the week with a flight at the end of it.
Fallback B
On the changeover Monday
North base → Matera → Lecce in one run. Gets Matera without a round trip and without spending a base day on it.
The catch: 3h 45 of driving on a day you're also checking out and checking in, luggage in the car in a city with a car-crime reputation, and you lose the Ostuni lunch stop. The hardest single day of any Puglia-only plan.
Sunday, and if it rains, the Monday
Matera earns a proper morning and no luggage in the car, and Sunday is the only slot that gives it both. If the forecast kills the Sunday, fallback B — folding it into the Monday changeover — is the better of the two, because at least you're driving that day anyway. It costs the Ostuni lunch stop and makes for a 3h 45 day.
Whichever day it lands on, the morning is the fixed part. Matera is bare stone with no shade, and in September the afternoon in that ravine is genuinely unpleasant rather than merely hot.
The beaches
Sea at 24–26°C in early September, air 25–28°C, lidos open through the month at 30–40% below August rates. All four zones fit this week.
Ionian Salento — Pescoluse, Punta Prosciutto, Porto Cesareo
Fine white sand, shallow turquoise water that stays warm, dunes behind. The best beach day of the trip and the reason not to shorten the Lecce stay. An hour from Lecce, so it needs its own day.
Adriatic Salento — Torre dell'Orso, Baia dei Turchi, Grotta della Poesia
Sandy crescents between limestone cliffs, pine forest to the waterline. 30–40 minutes from Lecce, so an easy afternoon. Grotta della Poesia is the better swim of the two — make sure it's on the list.
The masseria coast — Torre Canne, Rosa Marina, Savelletri
Not dramatic, but minutes from base and often served by a beach club. Where the late afternoons happen, including the one after Matera.
Polignano & Monopoli
The most photographed and the most crowded. Lama Monachile is spectacular to look at and uncomfortable to lie on; Monopoli next door is the easier swim. Parking fills by mid-morning, so go early.
What to book ahead
Five is the awkward size — too many to walk in anywhere good. Ordered by how far ahead it matters. Verify hours yourself; these change.
Matera, Sunday lunch — book now
The only real deadline. Sunday hours are patchy and five needs asking.
Vitantonio Lombardo — starred, wants weeks. Baccanti or Le Botteghe — a tier below, still book. Pick one, build the day around it.
Grotte di Castellana — book if you want the long tour
Timed entry, and the full three-kilometre tour sells out in season while the short one usually doesn't. It's the Saturday hot-afternoon escape at a steady 18°C, so it's only worth booking if you've decided you want it.
Lecce dinners — book the two evenings you care about
Three nights, and the centro storico fills at weekends. Dinner rarely starts before 8:30pm.
Bros' — starred, tasting menu, genuinely divisive. Read reviews before committing five. Alle Due Corti — traditional Salentine, the one people return to.
Grotta Palazzese, Polignano — decide, don't default
The cliff-cave restaurant. Months ahead, very expensive, and the setting far outruns the food. Worth it for the view as a deliberate one-off — not as your best meal.
Grotta della Poesia — check before you drive there
Access is now controlled in season rather than the free-for-all it used to be, so confirm whether it's ticketed and capped on your date before making it the centrepiece of the Adriatic afternoon. Torre dell'Orso next door is the fallback.
Salento lidos — no booking, but go early
Pescoluse and Punta Prosciutto don't generally take reservations for five sunbeds, and the car parks fill by mid-morning. This one isn't solved by booking, only by leaving early. Bring coins.
Wherever you're staying — ask about dinner
Masserie and agriturismi with a kitchen often require booking their table even for guests, sometimes a day ahead. Worth asking at check-in rather than discovering it at eight in the evening on the Sunday you got back from Matera tired.
Considered, not included
Within reach and left out on purpose. Say the word on any of these and it goes in.
Otranto
Easternmost town in Italy, 45 minutes from Lecce. Walled white centre, Aragonese castle, a vast 12th-century mosaic floor and a chapel walled in 800 skulls. Baia dei Turchi is next door. The strongest omission — it would have to share the Wednesday.
Grotte di Castellana
Two miles of caves at a steady 18°C, twenty minutes from Alberobello. The obvious answer to a brutal inland afternoon, and it slots straight into the Saturday. Book the long tour ahead.
Egnazia
Excavated Greek then Roman port ten minutes from the Savelletri strip — walls, a paved Roman road, mosaics, few people. Nearly free in time if you base on that coast.
Gallipoli · Martina Franca
Gallipoli is an old town on its own Ionian island, 40 minutes from Lecce — pairs with the Tuesday beach day. Martina Franca is better baroque than Locorotondo with a fraction of the crowd; fold it into the Saturday morning.
Trani · Castel del Monte
Trani has possibly the loveliest cathedral on the Adriatic, but it's 45 minutes the wrong side of the airport. Castel del Monte is a remarkable octagonal castle and a shadeless hour and forty each way for one building.
Wineries
Primitivo di Manduria and Salice Salentino both do tastings within range. Left out because it needs a designated driver and the evenings are being built around caffè leccese rather than wine. Easy to add back.
Flying to Naples is now off the table for good
The flights are booked into and out of Bari — BA2606 out, BA2607 back. Anything that needed Naples flights, including the drive loop that made Matera free on the way, is gone. Not a preference any more, just a fact.

Still possible
Naples as a day trip by train
One option survives, and it survives intact: leave the car in Puglia and take the train from Bari. Nothing about the booked flights interferes with it.

Where it would have to go
This is the actual problem, and it's got harder rather than easier.
There is no longer a spare day to spend
When Naples was last costed, the plan had an unstructured Sunday and the train day came out of it. Matera now has that Sunday. So a Naples day trip has to displace something that's already load-bearing:
- →Instead of Matera, on the Sunday A straight swap of one big day for another. Naples by rail against the Sassi by car — and Matera has already been chosen over exactly this.
- →Instead of the Ionian beach day, Tuesday Costs the best beach day of the week on a beach-led trip, and you'd be travelling from Lecce rather than Bari, which is further still.
- →Instead of Polignano, Friday The most workable of the three — Friday is the softest day, and you'd still be based near Bari. Costs a beach morning and the first proper swim of the trip.
There's also a distance problem the earlier plan didn't have: with the northern base likely near Monopoli or Conversano rather than deep in the Valle d'Itria, the drive to Bari Centrale is 30–45 minutes each way on top of the seven hours of train.
Possible, but it now costs something you've already decided you want
The train option is unchanged and still works. What's changed is the week around it: there's no longer a loose day for it to occupy, so it has to take one from Matera, the Ionian beaches, or Polignano. Friday is the least painful of the three.
Given five adults, a 20:05 arrival, three unresolved accommodation questions and a car that still needs booking, this is the one thing on the whole plan that can safely wait. It needs no booking now — Trenitalia advance fares are cheaper than walk-up but they don't sell out the way an automatic MPV does.
Park it. If the group gets to Friday morning and wants a city rather than a beach, it's still there.
Applies regardless
The things that catch people out in Puglia, whatever you end up booking.
ZTL zones — the expensive one
Naples, Bari, Lecce, Ostuni, Polignano, Monopoli and Alberobello all have camera-enforced restricted centres. Drive past the sign without a permit and it's roughly €80–100 per entry, automatically, with no warning at the time. Fines surface months later via the rental company, who add their own fee.
Park in the paid lots outside and walk in — it's rarely more than five minutes. Don't blindly follow satnav; it will route you straight through one. If your Lecce hotel is inside the walls, email your registration ahead so they can register the car.
The hire car
Non-negotiable — Salento's beaches and the Valle d'Itria are effectively unreachable without one. Pick up and drop off are both Bari airport; one-way rentals across provinces aren't available, which is what ruled out the Naples version of this trip in the first place.
Five adults plus luggage means a seven-seat MPV with the back row folded, or two small cars. Book an automatic explicitly if anyone can't drive a manual — Italian fleets default to manual and automatics in the larger classes sell out first.
Beaches: lido or free
Most good beaches split between free stretches and lidos — private clubs charging for a sunbed and umbrella. Early September has everything still open, at 30–40% below August rates. Free stretches mean bringing your own everything, and parking near the popular Salento beaches fills by mid-morning. Bring coins.
Light and heat
Sunset is around 19:15 in early September and pulls in through the month, so beach afternoons end sooner than you'd expect. Midday inland is still around 28°C — Alberobello and Matera in full afternoon sun are hard work, which is why both are morning stops in every plan.
Sundays and Mondays close things
Small-town restaurants often shut Sunday evening or all Monday, and church hours contract on Sundays. Matera is on a Sunday, so check anything you're planning around.
Shops also close for riposo, roughly 13:30–16:30. Plan town stops around it.
Fuel and tolls
Almost none of this driving is tolled — the SS16 down the Adriatic and the SS379 to Brindisi are free, and the Matera route on the SS96/SS99 is free too. Only the A14 north of Bari charges, and you never need it.
Fuel stations distinguish servito (attended, noticeably dearer) from fai da te (self-service). Many are unstaffed on Sundays and after 20:00, and the automated machines can be picky about foreign cards — keep €20 in notes in the car as a fallback, and don't run the tank low on a Sunday.
Eating and drinking
Puglian food is vegetable-forward and cheap by Italian standards: orecchiette with turnip tops, burrata from Andria, focaccia barese, raw seafood on the coast. Dinner rarely starts before 8:30pm.
The alcohol-free side is genuinely good, not an afterthought: caffè leccese (iced espresso, almond syrup), latte di mandorla everywhere, granita instead of an aperitivo. Expect a small per-person coperto.
